Steps and advice on how to remove a virus

Steps to remove a virus

As with everything on this website and in the videos, we do not take any responsibility for any damage or problems to a computer.

If there is a specific tool built to remove a specific virus type then it should be used as is specifically built. Otherwise you will need tools such as antivirus and antimalware.

To start with we would recommend using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Trend Micro Housecall. We have had a lot of success using these programs. It should find most virus as long as is not hidden by a rootkit.

Trend Micro Housecall - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

With Malwarebytes there is a free and paid version, the free version should be enough to remove a virus. With Trend Micro you will need to download the 32bit version unless your computer is 64bit.

It may be possible to just run these programs and remove the virus, but some virus take hold of your computer and stop you doing what is possible to remove them. One trick to aiding the removal is to install the programs, check for their updates and then restarting your computer into safe mode with command prompt.

To to this, restart the computer and as it is starting up, keep tapping F8 on your keyboard until it shows you a screen about safe mode or advanced startup options.

From this page select safe mode with command prompt. This will then load windows with just a black command prompt window. Type "explorer" (without quotes) and press enter. You should then see your desktop.

From here you can now run a Malwarebytes full scan. Alternatively you can restart into safe mode with networking, which is just the same steps as before but allows a network connection which is what Housecall requires as it is an online scanner.

Once you select to run Housecall, go to options before you run a scan and change the setting to full scan and confirm it, then run the scan.

Another program that can be used - Hitman Pro

Malwarebytes recently made their own AntiRookit program, which is in beta and a bit more dangerous.

Another method of removal is to manually remove infected files to cripple the virus to aid the removal, but doing this makes it very easy to damage your computer if you don't know what you are doing.
